A clear life vision is the path home to yourself. It helps keep us anchored and resilient through the storms of life.
A clear and compelling Life Vision kept me anchored after my parents died, through severe chronic pain and anxiety, after a traumatic car accident, after my son died, through PTSD and deep grief, and through Covid. It has walked with me through seasons of darkness, pain, and hibernation, and seasons of stretching, fun, and hopeful creating.
It lights my path when sifting through challenging choices I need to make, and delightful ones, and when I need help remembering the truth of who I am and how I choose to show up to this “wild and precious life” of mine (Mary Oliver reference).
I don’t want to miss my life by being distracted by shiny things, by comparison, or waiting for some mythical “perfect day.” I choose to show up fully today and to every day that I get.
I notice when my suffering is the result of “bumping up against reality” and practice releasing my grip to live fully present and willing in the truth of what is.
what is a life vision?
A life vision includes the why, what, and how of the life you truly want. It helps you translate your values and desires into practical (imperfect) action. Living with a life vision keeps us anchored and on purpose instead of being pulled to and fro by comparison, fads, FOMO, or distraction.
Some people come to life visioning more naturally than others. But in every case, doing this work can help you live with more clarity and confidence.
how do i walk out my values?
If you do nothing else, I recommend that you identify your 3-5 core values (see the lists of values below). It is also helpful to then identify which values are your top two in this season. This way, when you have a harder decision or you need to sift through your own ‘competing tensions and desires’ to decide what you’ll take action on in this season, you use your top values as the primary filter.
To walk out our values means to live them. Every day. Every moment of every day. They serve as our guiding light.
Our core values provide gentle structure or boundaries to our life in a way that reduces stress and friction and makes space for more joy and greater wellbeing and life satisfaction.
You need to know where you’re heading to live on purpose. And you need to identify where you are right now to craft a values-aligned and soul-honouring path forward. Get my Life Vision Flowchart + Checklist + 20m video to your inbox.
