To build a healthy and respectful relationship with oneself we first must learn to bring awareness to our current patterns, beliefs, the things that activate us to self-protect. We need to practice listening inward to what we truly want and need whether a glass of water, a better boundary with a particular friend, or a whole new vision for our life.
