We can stop waiting for a mythical ‘fear-less’ life. Judging or shaming ourselves for feeling normal human emotions leads to numbing, running, and bypassing. None of this leads to freedom.
Sometimes fear is extra loud in our lives even though we are objectively safe. In these seasons, fear keeps us hiding under the overs, harms our health, and robs us of joy. It holds us back from showing up fully to life.
We need to get curious about and name the roots of our fear so we can break the power of shame, recalibrate, and build a new pattern of taking imperfect action through the fear, towards what we want or need. As we practice showing up afraid as often as needed, we recognize that we are strong, wise, and capable of doing hard things. We start to FEEL this truth in our body. It’s like building new muscle memory.
We can live with joy, TODAY, amid the messiness of life. Perfection not required.
A critical part of reclaiming freedom, wholeness, and joy is naming our fear, shame and judgment-free. Naming it, building our internal and external resources so we can feel vulnerable emotions like fear (but also grief, rage, and joy) without crumbling, and then consciously choosing our response. As Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl wrote, “in our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

Grief, trauma, world events, relationship, work, health or financial issues, for instance, can all contribute to fear. But even in seasons that feel hard, we can learn to face fear head-on rather than running or hiding.
And when there’s nothing truly “wrong” in the moment we sometimes live with a simmering sense of fear or anxiety or struggle to show up through discomfort to go after what we want.
We can learn to plant our feet, turn to face the thing that scares us, name it (clarity = calm), separate truth from fiction and write new stories where needed, and then choose our response. As Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl wrote, “in our response lies our growth and our freedom.”
You’re imperfect. Life is messy, Show up anyway.
We must build the muscle of imperfect action through the messiness of life rather than waiting for life to feel neat and tidy or waiting to feel completely ready. We find our way in action, not before. We grow into the strength that we need in action, not before.
